Motive for becoming involved in the conspiracy:
A burning desire to keep a struggling newspaper in print coupled with the
understanding that to speak out truthfully against local corruption would
subject said newspaper to the same treatment as the radio station. Speaking out
truthfully would also guarantee the retraction of an offer of a substantial loan
guaranteed by Shamrock Economic Development Corporation. Speaking out truthfully
would also guarantee the cancellation of tens of thousand of dollars in
advertising purchased by SEDC member owned businesses. Advertising purchased
from grants obtained by David Rushing and distributed to SEDC board members who then "vote" to give the grant moneys
to themselves while agreeing to spend the grant money exclusively on advertising
with Toby Brooks' "County Star-News".
The first time I met Toby Brooks was on a summer day during
2002 when I-40, west of Shamrock, had been closed so that emergency
personnel could "life-flight" an entire truck load of immigrants who had
been involved in an accident to Amarillo for emergency care.
Of course, wanting to get the news out so as make the situation more
understandable to travelers, a friend and I grabbed a digital camera and went to
the scene of the accident to cover the story.
We shot some pictures at the scene and, within just a few minutes of arriving
back at the radio station, had the pictures posted on the radio station's
website with a very brief explanation as to why I-40 west was temporarily closed
and that the complete story would be available next Wednesday in Shamrock's
County Star-News. (This was an attempt at conveying the most important point of
the story - that I-40 west was temporarily closed for good cause - while NOT
"stealing the thunder" from the County Star-News.)
After the pictures were posted, some 20 to 30 minutes after the accident had
occurred, we went on the air with the short-form story and advised our listeners
that there were "limited pictures available on our website but, the full story
will be available next Wednesday in Shamrock's County Star-News".
Within ten minutes, I had been called into David Rushing's office and was being
berated by both David Rushing and Toby Brooks "because our radio station does
NOT do news! News is for the newspaper ONLY and the radio station will not EVER
be doing any local news again!"
Thus ended my dreams of a close and friendly "working relationship" with Toby
Brooks and his "County Slur-News" as it has now come to be known.
